Garden City Essay
Literature focuses on the study of literary texts, developing students as independent, innovative, and creative learners & thinkers, who appreciate the aesthetic use of language, evaluate perspectives and evidence and challenge idea and interpretations. Literature explores how literary works shape the perceptions of the world and enable us to enter other worlds of imagination. Through literature, we establish and articulate views through creative response & logical argument. We reflect on the literary texts, appreciate the power of language and inquire into relationships between personal preference of texts, authors and contexts through exploration of ideas, concepts, attitudes and values. The following enumerates the rationale of the book, ââ¬Å"Ang Panitikan at Kulturang Pilipinoâ⬠. RATIONALE To be able to identify and give meaning to literature. Identify the different forms of Philippine Literature. Differentiate the similarities and differences of different forms of literature based on elements and its characteristics. Have a deeper understanding on the various forms of Philippine Literature. To be able to differentiate the different forms and kinds of literature for the enrichment of oneââ¬â¢s understanding on Philippine culture. Give importance to the elements and qualities of Philippine Literature through reading. Give importance to the different aspects of life, be it personal, moral, social, relative to the study of literature. This book is both a study, a research, and the information itself. The basis of the data focuses on the title itself, which points to the Philippine Literature and Culture. Different insights from different authors and culture of the Philippine History were bounded up, carefully and profoundly detailed with the remarks of the authors itself are of the most significance as to the book overview. Philippine Culture is a mixture of cultures from different conquerors, whichà shaped it to a unique formation of classical and cultural distinction throughout the country. Since there are cultural uniqueness and emphasis of the bookââ¬â¢s overall study, it is a very good reference to any individual who would like to pursue the Philippine History. From the passed-down ethnic stories and poems to the height of the changes of the Philippine Literature, and of people who use their literary skills to express their different views towards their own truth and views, this book wrote the wholeness of the culture in respect to the ethnical diversity. As I have observed, the highlight of the book is mostly the works of the Philippine writers who created their own expressions and definitely a work of art, which I must say, I read from the main ideas of the stories they included. Divided into ten chapters, from the relation of Literature and History, the Philippine inherited cultures and traditions, folk narratives, different religious beliefs, literal works, Philippine History itself and how it affects the cultural changes, to the poems and stories of famous personas of Philippine Literature. In a holistic cultural perspective, the different cultures and traditions, their origin, relationship to each other, uniqueness, and their work of arts greatly shapes the beauty of the Philippine History, Culture and Literature. Despite the difference, the Filipino values are buried deep on every hearts of every tribe, every belief and every religious view of a Filipino towards the literature. We might adapt to different environment or stick to our own traditions, came from different origins or bonded by the same blood, the passion towards the Filipino literature and culture are of the same. Reading with the passion of knowing the Philippine Literature will lead the very significance of the book. I, being a Filipino, would grow up studying and educating myself with the culture, language and standards of other countries abroad, but know a few of mine. Like me, a lot of students suffer from this lack of cultural interest, knowing that I must do a detailed research to feed my mind of the different cultures of my country, and will engulf me to stop engaging more. With this book review, I learned a lot and felt like I had a cultural tour with the literature. I love how they defined the importance of the literature on the first page of Chapter 1, which by means I will quote: ââ¬Å"Literature is the expression of a personââ¬â¢s emotion towardsà the world, the living, the society and government, and the relationship of the soul to the Creator.â⬠(Bro. Azarias, Philosophy of Literature) Literature is expression itself, a very easy approach to its meaning. One thing I learned from this book aside of its background study of the Philippine culture is that, whatever I do everyday marks my own literature. It doesnââ¬â¢t have any formal requirement in it. Everything that occupies every single corner of the vision of the eye, is literature itself. And putting it to expression is an art. What you understand is your truth, whether it is not the same for every people, we have our own jurisdiction who separates our own way of understanding our literature and culture. Thus, this book did not only educate me, but gave me a great weapons I can truly be proud of; the limit of my imagination, and my pen. ââ¬Å"â⬠¦the guts to write bravely of what they see around them: the pain and the ugliness of the world as well as the beauty and the joy of it, the triumphs of life as well as its surrenders, manââ¬â¢s mean desires as well as the noble ambition that exalt him.â⬠(S .P. Lopez)

ââ¬ÅEveââ¬â¢s Diaryââ¬Â by Mark Twain Essay
ââ¬Å"Eveââ¬â¢s Diaryâ⬠is a satirical account of the days in the Garden of Eden. Twain recounts the well-known tale of Genesis through a series of journal entries written by Adam and Eve; these personal accounts make for an entertaining and thought-provoking read. Twainââ¬â¢s personifications of gender stereotypes are easily identified but lead the reader into a further exploration of Twainââ¬â¢s deeper purpose. Twainââ¬â¢s writing style explicates the paradoxical relationship between men and women. Furthermore, Adam and Eveââ¬â¢s conflicting perspectives within the journal entries provide an illustration of their magnetic reliance on one another, despite their polar differences. The story begins with Eve on the day after her creation; Twain creates a tone of despair as Eve ponders her situation and existence. ââ¬Å"That is what I AM-an experiment; just an experiment, and nothing moreâ⬠(Twain 10). As Eve deducts that there must be a counterpart to her existence, her disposition abruptly changes from anguish to optimism. Through this character development, Twain portrays companionship as Eveââ¬â¢s salvation and furthermore, mocks the modern idea of the contingency of a womanââ¬â¢s survival on that of a manââ¬â¢s. Eveââ¬â¢s perception changes as abruptly as her disposition. Once her mind is at ease, she becomes conscious and appreciative of her surroundings. ââ¬Å"This majestic new world is indeed a most noble and beautiful work. And certainly marvelously near to being perfect, notwithstanding the shortness of the timeâ⬠(Twain 14). Twain uses Eveââ¬â¢s passionate and enthusiastic mentality as a personification of the model of femini nity according to nineteenth century stereotypes. The diction and timing of Adamââ¬â¢s introduction exaggerates Eveââ¬â¢s naivety and sets a precedent for Twainââ¬â¢s exploration of their paradoxical relationship.à Eveââ¬â¢s entry reads, ââ¬Å"All the week I tagged around after him and tried to get acquainted. I had to do the talking, because he was shy, but I didnââ¬â¢t mind it. He seemed pleased to have me around, and I used the sociable ââ¬Ëweââ¬â¢ a good deal, because it seemed to flatter him to be includedâ⬠(Twain 35). Though it is told from Eveââ¬â¢s perspective, Twain wants the reader to negate Eveââ¬â¢s idealization when reading of her interactions with Adam. When one does so, Adamââ¬â¢s annoyance with Eve is apparent. In addition, Twain makes a considerable effort to portray Adam as haughty, cynical, and drastically unattached in comparison to Eve; Twain uses Adam as a personification of stereotypical conception of masculinity. ââ¬Å"During the last day or two I have taken all the work of naming things off his hands, and this has been a great relief to him, for he has no gift in that line, and is evidently very gratefulâ⬠(Twain 178). If interpreted in the manner Twain intended, it is clear that Adam has no concern with naming the creatures and is equally indifferent towards Eve. Twain develops these satirical personifications even further to serve two slightly less superficial purposes. Twain uses these conceptions to delve into the profound relationship between men and women but also to denounce them through his diction. Twainââ¬â¢s defiance begins with his decision to give Eve, a woman, the predominant voice in the narrative. He shows further disregard for popular opinion when he tells of the creation of fire. ââ¬Å"I had created something that didnââ¬â¢t exist before; I had added a new thing to the worldââ¬â¢s uncountable properties; I realized this, and was proud of my achievement, and was going to run and find him and tell him about it, thinking to raise myself in his esteem-but I reflected, and did not do it. No-he would not care for itâ⬠(Twain 67). Twainââ¬â¢s decision to credit such a pivotal aspect of human survival to a woman exhibits either an immense reverence for women or a severe distain for unoriginal thought. Regardless, Twainââ¬â¢s upheaval of the hierarchy of traditional Western gender roles transcends time and leaves the reader to contemplate the validity of gender roles. Ursula LeGuin, a published and renowned author of short stories herself, discusses the prevalence of personification of stereotypical gender rolesà within _Adam and Eveââ¬â¢s Diary_. LeGuin argues that Twainââ¬â¢s personifications of gender stereotypes are the most important aspect of any literally analysis of works by Mark Twain (LeGuin 32). Deviating slightly from the focus of LeGuinââ¬â¢s analysis, the most important purpose of ââ¬Å"Eveââ¬â¢s Diaryâ⬠to be the paradoxical relationship between men and women. As the journal progresses, so does the connection between Adam and Eve. Although their differences remain vast, Adam and Eve demonstrate a dynamic reliance on one another. They compliment one another in a sense of discord; their stereotypical personas seem to become less obtrusive as they grow together. Through Eve, Adam is humbled and learns to be appreciative and observant of his surroundings. Adam has a similar effect on Eve; her interest in aesthetics diminishes and while she remains optimistic, she is not so dangerously naà ¯ve. The story digresses to forty years later, with Adam at Eveââ¬â¢s grave. Adamââ¬â¢s eulogy for his lifeless wife is ingeniously engineered to resonate with nearly every reader. He says, ââ¬Å"Wheresoever she was, THERE was Edenâ⬠(Twain 129). Adam, and therefore the male gender collectively, possessed a magnetic dependence on Eve that was as involuntary as the polar differences between the two. Twain accomplished a feat that the laws of nature could not; through ââ¬Å"Adam and Eveââ¬â¢s Diary,â⬠Twain provides an unprecedented look into why men and women attract in circumstances that should naturally repel them from one another. A New Joe on the Block
He needs to understand what makes a coffee shop popular in United States c. Joe needs to know the coffee consumption pattern in United States. 2. What are the deliverables that an outside researcher should produce to help Joe with the Key decision? An outside researcher should be able to provide enough information through descriptive research about key problems faced by his client, ââ¬Å"Joeâ⬠. The result should have information like right location for coffee shops; commercial areas might be more suitable for coffee shops than residential areas. Also what affects the popularity of coffee shop, whether it is the brand, services, price, products, consumer behavior and to what extent these variables have on the popularity of the coffee shops, and lastly, how often people consume coffee and what affects their consumption habits. 3. How relevant are the coffee taste studies cited above? Explain. Each study is relevant in its own way. The first two studies compared the four brands with different outcome. The study that surveyed 100 consumers form a small organics shop provides some insight into the behavior of some adamant coffee drinkers, part of which can be used in understanding the attributes of popular coffee shops. The other studies show different opinion about coffee taste preferences from different locations. All these can provide some kind of understanding about the competitorââ¬â¢s landscape. 4. What flaws in the coffee taste studies should Joe consider in trying to weigh the merits of their results? The flaw in the first two taste studies is that the conclusions are based on opinion of single person and not a random sample that could reflect consistent pattern among the target consumers. Research based on a single person is not as strong as it would be if it were to be based on more of the target population. The taste studies also reviewed a sample of 100 people from an organic shop, which isnââ¬â¢t the market Joe would be targeting for his coffee shop. 5. Briefly relate this situation to each of the major stages of the marketing research process. If Joe wants to conduct a business research, firstly he needs the objective in this case that would be what kind of coffee people in United States like and which is the best possible place for his coffee shop. Then he needs to plan a research design and a sample study. Collecting and analyzing the data comes next. Surveying would be the most appropriate in this case. After analyzing the data Joe or his researcher can produce a report to conclude the study. 6. Try to do a quick search to explore the question ââ¬Å" are american consumer preference the same all across the United States ? Search in the internet shows that Americans choice of coffee is not much different than one another. It may differ a little in terms of place but most of them go for instant coffee and majority of coffee-drinking Americans go for franchaise coffee shop and are loyal to them. The biggest franchaise in America are Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donuts, Starbucks, Mcdonalds. 11% of American adults go to Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donuts. Where as 13% of American adults go to Starbucks. 7. Would it be better for Joe to do the research himself or have a consultant perform the work? From the report of the research Joe will decide where to open a coffee shop, what kind of coffee he should produce and where to produce. I believe a hiring a specialist is much more suitable option in this situation. 8. If a consultant comes in to do the job, what are three key deliverables that would likely be important to Joe in making a decision to launch the Cup of Joe coffee shop? The three deliverables Joe is looking from his hired consultant would be; which place would be best for his coffee shop, what makes a coffee shop successful and which combination of price and quality most people in that region like most.

Ethically Bound and Legally Speaking -Discussion Essay
Ethically Bound and Legally Speaking -Discussion - Essay Example The medical team did what they could to save the life of the patient. The patient emerged from surgery alive but was clearly going to have a very low quality of life if he lived long. Hours after the surgery, the patient developed complications and was clearly experiencing excruciating pain in different parts of his body. I realized that the patient was not going to live long. His condition deteriorated by the minute in spite of the efforts that the medical team were applying. Meanwhile the costs associated with his care continued to soar even as his quality of life dwindled and level of pain increased. The temptation to turn off the life support machines was high if not to save the patient from the pain he was suffering then to save his family from incurring additional costs for his care. He was going to die shortly; within a few days or weeks at the most anyway. I was torn between applying the principles of beneficence and nonmaleficence. The principle of nonmaleficence dictates that clinicians should do no harm to their patients (Aveyard, 2004). On the other hand, the principle of beneficence dictates that clinicians act in the best interest of the patient such as by taking action to prevent physical harm or pain (Aveyard, 2004). By switching off the life support machines, I would save the patient the agony he was going through as a result of his injuries and low quality of life. On the other hand, I would seem to have done the patient harm by switching off the machines. In the end, I decided to go by the latter. We opted to do the best we could to make the patient feel less pain even as he approached his death naturally. I believe the stand that I took was appropriate especially considering my strong belief in the sanctity of life. The alternative action would have been to switch off the machines and save the patient from having to endure so much pain. This perhaps
